Incorporating Lean Principles into Pharmaceutical QC Laboratory Design - PharmaEngineering Article

Novartis Vaccines has applied a structured implementation of lean principles across Quality Control (QC) laboratories in Europe, India, China and the United States. The aim has been to significantly improve internal work processes, communications, customer interfaces, and operational performance. The development of Novartis Vaccines' lean lab guidelines were spearheaded by a team of users and consultants which included Tom Reynolds, Operations Practice Director at BSM. 

This article recently published in the ISPE  Pharmaceutical Engineering  magazine presents a case study based on an international workshop hosted by Novartis Vaccines to prepare guidelines for incorporating lean principles into pharmaceutical quality control laboratory design. 

The design, layout, and placement of labs can have a significant positive or negative impact on the implementation and sustainability of lean processes and behaviours within the lab.
